Carriage of baggage

In the context of the free baggage allowance SunExpress carries 20 kg of baggage per passenger on international flights in addition to one carry-on item weighing up to 6 kg maximum. Infants under 2 years of age have a free baggage allowance of 10 kg. Prams/buggies, children’s travel cots and car seats are carried additionally in the hold and without charge.

For the safety and comfort of our passengers only one carry-on item per passenger is allowed in the cabin, weighing up to a maximum of 6 kg. For all additional pieces of baggage an excess baggage rate of 8.- Euro per kg per way is charged. We ask all passengers to clearly mark their baggage with name, home and vacation address.

The baggage allowance per adult and children on flights within Turkey is 15 kg.  Infants do not have baggage allowance. An excess baggage fee of 6.- TL/kg for Erzurum, Trabzon, Kars, Diyarbakır, Van routes and  a fee of  4.- TL/kg for the other domestic routes is charged per flight.

Loss of or damage to baggage must be declared immediately following the discovery of damage to the handling personnel responsible at the airport. As all airlines’ liability for checked baggage is limited, important items should be transported in carry-on luggage. In any case, taking out additional baggage insurance is recommended.

Carry-on luggage

To ensure the safety and comfort of our passengers, carry-on luggage in the cabin is limited to a single piece weighing a maximum of 6 kg, whose dimensions many not exceed 56 x 45 x 25 cm. Larger items must be checked in with the passenger’s baggage. It is not allowed to carry sharp and pointed objects (e.g. jack-knives, nail scissors, knitting needles, etc.) in carry-on pieces. Should such items be confiscated during the security check of carry-on items, it is usually not possible anymore to check in items as hold baggage. Passengers must then do without these items. Important documents, valuable items and medications should not be transported in check-in baggage, but only in carry-on pieces.

EU security regulations for carry-on baggage

Since November 2006, new regulations concerning carry-on luggage has been in effect for all flights taking off from airports within the EU, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland: only small quantities of liquids such as beverages, gels, creams and pastes may be transported in carry-on baggage. Turkey adopted the same regulations in March 2009. These rules are applied to all flights and at all times.

  • Liquids or comparable products of similar consistency (this includes gels, sprays, shampoos, lotions, creams, toothpaste, for example) may only be carried in small quantities, packaged in small individual containers.
  • Permitted are containers up to 100 ml that are transported in a transparent and resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one liter. This plastic bag may contain any number of containers but must close completely.
  • One such bag per passenger is allowed.
  • At the control points it must be taken out of the carry-on baggage to be passed separately through the x-ray machine.

It is highly recommended that passengers purchase such bags in good time and that they pack at home those liquids and comparable products they intend to transport in their carry-on luggage.

Exception for special food or medications

Medications and special foods (e.g. baby formula) that will be needed during the flight can be carried outside of the plastic bag. At the control points, passengers need to present such items separately from their carry-on luggage and plausibly explain why they need these items.

Sealed-bag procedure for alcoholic beverages and cosmetics from duty-free shops

Duty-free items that passengers have bought on the day of their flight in a shop after having passed the boarding pass control point at an EU airport or on board an aircraft operated by an EU carrier may be taken by the passenger through the security control if they are packaged in a transparent bag that has been sealed by the shop’s personnel. The bag must contain a receipt than can be read from outside, stating the date and place of the sale.

This procedure allows for duty-free shopping even when the security check takes place upon entering the gate area. It also allows problem-free transfers with duty-free merchandise at other airports within the EU. For this purpose the bag needs remained closed and sealed to the end of the last flight segment.
Different rules currently apply to flights to the USA.

Carriage of animals

(except flights from/to United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta und Sweden)

Please make your special booking for animal transportation as soon as possible, but not later than 3 working days before departure.  To do so, please contact  our travel center or download our registration form for special services.

Import regulations, customs documents, veterinary health certificates, inoculations, customs specifications for foreign countries etc. are all the responsibility of the passenger. Please contact the Foreign Embassy of the country you are visiting for information on import requirements, e.g. for inoculations and identification.

Animals may only travel if accompanied by a passenger, and must be registered. Please observe the relevant entry conditions.

Animal passport

Animal passports have been a legal requirement since 1 October 2004. Anyone wishing to take a dog or cat abroad will need the blue EU document for their four-legged friend. It is valid in all member states of the European Union, and confirms that the animal has been inoculated against rabies. The international certificate of inoculation previously issued will apply for twelve months from issue.

For further information please contact your veterinarian or the Federal Department for Consumer Protection, Nutrition and Agriculture.
