CAPPADOCIA

Cappadocia is a striking, dreamlike landscape of rock and cones, capped pinnacles and fretted ravines located southeast from Ankara. Houses have been constructed from the soft, volcanic rock since the early 400 BC and complicated cave systems have provided shelter for generations of oppressed settlers.
Nowadays, Cappadocia is a mixture of really impressive scenery, just as beautiful in the winter as in the summertime. The town is an excellent destination for those who like outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking and hot-air ballooning. It is also one of the most compelling historic regions is this culturally rich country.

The most important towns are Nevsehir and Urgup and the intriguing fact is that many people still live, at least partially, in cave dwellings. Consequently, in the main tourist center there are a few charming small hotels with cave rooms.

The biggest attraction is probably Göreme, with over 30 beautifully frescoed Byzantine rock churches open to the public. Zelve has an immense, somewhat strange underground monastic complex. Concentrated around rock pinnacles and crowned by citadels, the villages of Ortahisar and Uchisar offer excellent views.

Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, two of the biggest and most exciting underground cities in the area (out of more than 400), offer a complex system of apartments, public rooms and streets that could virtually house hundreds of people. Avanos is a pretty little town in the northern part of the area with a flourishing local ceramics industry. Further away from Cappadocia, lies another Byzantine religious hiding place, with approximately 60 churches, most of them still painted of a perfect green.
